The responsibility of formulating an effective and efficient budget ultimately falls on the mother. The lady of the house is well equipped to not only formulate the budget for the entire family but a lot of the responsibility of adhering to this budget is also in her hands. She can have a say in the matters of family spending and can guide the children and instill such values right from very young age. Keep aside a certain amount of the family income for luxuries and spur of the moment spending. What is the use of toiling year in and year out if one cannot enjoy the small and unexpected or unnecessary thing of life now and again?

A special set of golf clubs, a visit to a spa or salon, a quick weekend getaway for the family can all be worked out if the budget is cleverly formulated and strictly adhered to. Mother's should allocate a fixed amount of pocket money to the children right from the time they understand the value of money. Children should be encouraged to stay well within this amount of pocket money every month. Rewards can be given to those kids who limit their expenses and small penalties should be levied on those that do not.

Children should be made to do odd jobs around the house for a certain wage to encourage them to collect extra pocket money. This should be saved till the amount is quite large to buy something useful which the child needs. Encouragement to buy gifts for parents and grandparents is one way of teaching the children budgeting and thoughtfulness and caring all in one.

'Waste not want not' should be the motto of every household. Heavy and unnecessary spending on grocery and food is another drain on family budget. Mothers should look out for sales at departmental stores. There are many stores that introduce some schemes on food products. Bulk buying or purchasing of larger packets also reduces the budget to a great extent. Scour out recipes on the internet which recommends the use of low cost but nutritious ingredients. No wastage of food should be resorted to. Mothers should ensure that no food items get wasted or thrown into the dump. This is a lot of hard earned money literally going down the drain.

If the mother is a good seamstress it will save a lot of money. Mothers are very good at recycling of clothes, getting the clothes tailored at home or carrying out alterations which will save a good amount on tailoring costs. Children in the neighborhood can be sent to school in car pools. Mothers should meet together to work out a plan in which mothers can take turns in dropping kids to school. This saves a lot on petrol costs and unnecessary wastage of time and efforts.

Recycle, reuse and refuse should be the motto to save money and budget your expenses. Sensible spending and limited and reasonable living will go a long way in ensuring the economic stability of a family.
